Cold DMs Are Dead Ends: How to Find Warm Leads in Competitor Comment Sections

2026-09-13 · 1 min read · By Marcus Lin · NoobClaw Blog
TL;DR
  • Open competitor comments and sort by newest—top comments are old news.
  • Money comments: price complaints, "does anyone know," "I just switched from X."
  • Track five fields only: comment, pain, buyer stage, next step, follow-up date.
  • Never DM before you've replied publicly in the same thread.

I cold-DM'd 60 strangers scraped from a competitor's comment section. Three answered. One asked me to remove him from a list. The leads weren't cold—my method was frozen solid.

The buyers are already telling you what they need in public. You're just scanning for 🔥 instead of listening for pain. Sort by newest comments, not top, and the warm leads jump out. Here's the repeatable way to do it without turning into a spam account.

Stop calling it "lead gen." Call it "reading the complaint."

A warm lead is anybody with a public problem and enough motivation to type it. Not the person who wrote "🔥🔥🔥" under your competitor's post. It's the one who wrote "I was about to buy this but $99/month is steep" or "Does this work for a small agency or just solo creators?" They're mid-decision. They're not cold—they're just being ignored by the competitor.

You don't need thousands of profiles. Find 10 to 15 money comments per week and turn them into conversations. That beats 500 scraped emails because intent is already visible in public. A fire emoji is not a lead. A public objection is.

Warm lead = public problem + buying intent. A fire emoji is neither.

Rule: Never DM before you've replied publicly on the same thread. Answer the complaint first, then slide in with context.
