How to Become a Crypto KOL in 2026: Build on Commentary, Get Paid by Platform Rules, and Disclose Every Deal

2026-09-27 · 9 min read · By Marcus Lin · NoobClaw official blog
TL;DR
  • Neither platform that pays crypto creators directly pays per follower. X Original Content Rewards needs 500,000 verified-user impressions in 90 days and 500 verified followers; Binance Square Write to
  • X explicitly rewards commentary ("reacting to, analyzing, or building on" news counts as original) and excludes automated posts and reposts of other people's content. Binance Square pays on reader tra
  • Sponsorships are where crypto KOLs get into trouble. X requires its Paid Partnership toggle, and crypto is not eligible for paid partnerships at all in the EU, UK and Australia.
  • US regulators want the nature, source and amount of pay disclosed for crypto asset securities (the Kardashian case cost $1.26M). This article is not investment advice.

"The KOL list was the same one a friend's project got from them, same 40 names and same prices. Followers grew by 20k in a month, but replies under posts stayed the same." That was someone who hired crypto marketing agencies for a DeFi project and now works at one, writing on r/defi on September 20, 2026, about what agencies sell as "crypto KOLs". If you want to become one, that sentence explains the job better than most guides do. At least some of the people who hire KOLs now look past the total; one commenter in that thread called follower count "basically vanity if replies and on-chain actions stay flat." And the platforms that pay creators directly don't pay per follower: at most, followers are an entry gate.

The top results for this query tell you to pick a niche, reply a lot and post two or three times a day. That is fine but incomplete. None of them covers the two things that decide whether the account lasts: the exact rules under which X and Binance Square pay creators, and the disclosure and promotion rules behind the fines, bans and criminal cases. We read both sets of primary texts on September 27, 2026. This article is not investment advice and does not discuss any token's price.

What does a crypto KOL actually do, and what makes one trusted?

A key opinion leader is someone whose read on events changes what others do. In crypto that usually means explaining news, protocols and risks faster and more clearly than the people following you could do alone. The account can be anonymous, but the reasoning has to be visible.

The simplest start that holds up: pick one beat narrow enough that you can be early (a single chain, stablecoin regulation, exchange listings, on-chain security incidents), post your analysis where that conversation already happens, and keep a public record of what you said and why. Our KOL library collects public profiles if you want to study how established accounts divide their time between original threads, replies and reposts.

Two things to avoid from day one. Buying followers buys nothing: neither payout formula below counts followers, and, as that poster noticed, the people who would hire you can see the flat replies. And price calls are the quickest way into the legal territory covered below.

Which platforms pay crypto creators, and what do they pay for?

Two venues crypto KOLs use most pay creators directly: X and exchange content hubs such as Binance Square. Their formulas point in different directions, and neither pays per follower.

What the table means for a new account. X pays for attention from paying users, and it says plainly what it wants: "Commentary is at the heart of X. Reacting to, analyzing, or building on what's happening in the world is a legitimate and valued form of original expression." Binance pays on something else entirely: a share of fees when readers trade. That creates a conflict of interest you should name to your readers instead of hiding. A post that makes people trade more earns you more, whether or not trading was good for them. Our advice: write the analysis first and let the cashtag be incidental. Details of X's program are in our breakdown of X Original Content Rewards rules.

Taking a sponsorship: which disclosure rules apply to crypto KOLs?

Look at who has actually been penalized. In the US cases the charge was taking money without disclosing it; in the UK it was promoting regulated products without authorisation. None of the cases is about a bad call.

In October 2022 the SEC found that Kim Kardashian "failed to disclose that she was paid $250,000 to publish a post on her Instagram account about EMAX tokens"; she agreed to pay $1.26 million and not to promote crypto asset securities for three years (SEC 2022-183). The enforcement director stated the standard: anyone who promotes a crypto asset security "must disclose the nature, source, and amount of compensation". In March 2023 the SEC charged eight celebrities, among them Lindsay Lohan and Jake Paul, for touting TRX and/or BTT without disclosing pay (SEC 2023-59).

Now the platform layer. X's Paid Partnerships Policy defines a partnership broadly: gifted products, payment, in-kind perks, affiliate links or discount codes that earn you commission, or an ambassador deal. Such posts "must have the 'Paid Partnership' disclosure on", and the product or call to action must be clear "without requiring users to click on any additional links". Then comes the line most crypto guides miss. For the European Union, the United Kingdom and Australia, X lists "Financial products, services, or opportunities (including loans, investment services, crypto…)" as not eligible for paid partnership promotion. If you or your audience are in those markets, treat sponsored crypto posts on X as off-limits, disclosed or not; X's page doesn't say which location it applies to. Violations can mean post removal, read-only time and, on repeat, suspension.

Binance Square treats undisclosed sponsorship as a General Violation: "Posting marketing-related content without clearly stating that it is sponsored by a sponsor" (VII in its community guidelines, last updated February 16, 2026). The US FTC's Disclosures 101 adds three practical rules for multilingual KOLs. Put the disclosure with the endorsement, not in a pile of hashtags. Write it "in the same language as the endorsement itself". And don't treat a platform toggle as enough on its own. It also notes that US law applies to posts from abroad "if it's reasonably foreseeable that the post will affect U.S. consumers."

The toggle is the minimum. Say who paid you, in the language of the post, before the reader can act on it.

In the UK, the FCA's FG24/1 warns that influencers who promote a regulated financial product without approval from an authorised firm "may be committing a criminal offence". Its June 2025 international action produced 3 arrests in the UK and 50 warning alerts expected to lead to more than 650 takedown requests. For readers in mainland China, the Measures on online marketing of financial products take effect on September 30, 2026 (Article 39). Article 6 bars any organization or individual from providing online marketing services "or facilitation" for illegal financial activities, and names virtual currency issuance and trading among them. Check the original text for your own case; this is not legal advice.

How do you post across platforms without becoming a repost account?

Most crypto KOLs work X plus one or two exchange hubs, often in two languages. Here is what the rules actually restrict:

The reasons to write a separate version for the exchange hub are Binance Square's rule against mass-posting highly similar content and a different readership, not X's repost rule. A workable weekly rhythm: one long thread on your beat, a short take on each major news item within hours, replies under larger accounts that add a fact rather than an emoji, and a rewritten version for the exchange hub that leads with the part its readers care about.

The r/defi thread above named the other bottleneck: approvals ("one tweet waits a week for approval"). A drafting desk helps when a draft is ready for review the moment news breaks. NoobClaw's X posting has a web3 news-commentary mode that writes from the last few weeks of coverage, and its exchange-square posting (Binance, OKX, Bitget, Bybit, Gate) writes a separate version per account. Whatever tool you use, read every post before it goes out: anything "posted using automated means" earns nothing under X's rewards, and Binance's guidelines name bots directly. FAQ

How many followers do you need to be a crypto KOL?

No regulator or platform defines a KOL by follower count. The only hard numbers are platform programs: X's rewards need 500 verified followers and 500,000 verified-user impressions in 90 days. Some people who hire KOLs now look at replies and on-chain activity rather than totals, and bought followers show up as exactly that gap.

Can I use referral or affiliate links in my crypto posts?

On X, a link that earns you commission makes the post a paid partnership, so the toggle applies, and in the EU, UK and Australia crypto is not eligible for paid partnerships. On Binance Square, trades by users who registered through your referral do not count toward Write to Earn, and promoting other platforms' referral campaigns is a violation.

Do I need a license to talk about crypto?

Commentary and education are generally a different thing from promotion, but the line depends on where your audience is. The UK treats unapproved promotion of regulated products as a potential criminal offence, the US requires compensation to be disclosed, and mainland China's rules from September 30, 2026 cover facilitation of virtual currency trading. If you take paid work, get advice for your jurisdiction.

This is not investment advice. Nothing here recommends buying, selling or holding any crypto asset.
