Planoly vs Later (2026): A "Social Set" and a "Profile" Are Not the Same Unit

2026-09-04 ยท 6 min read ยท By Marcus Lin ยท NoobClaw Blog
TL;DR
  • Planoly bills by social set โ€” a bundle of one profile per network. Later bills by individual profile. Comparison tables that treat "1 set" as "1 account" are off by however many networks you use.
  • Planoly: 1 / 2 / 6 sets at roughly $14 / $24 / $47 a month annually. Later: 8 / 16 / 48 profiles at $25 / $50 / $110, with 30 / 180 / unlimited posts per profile per month.
  • The set unit is generous if you are one brand on many networks, and brutal if you run many accounts on one network.
  • Later caps output per profile. Planoly does not publish a post cap. That is the second number to check before the first one.

Every roundup that compares these two prints a table with a column headed "accounts included," puts 1 under Planoly Starter and 8 under Later Starter, and lets you conclude that Later is eight times better value. That conclusion is wrong, and it is wrong for a reason worth understanding, because the same mistake shows up across this whole category.

Planoly does not sell accounts. It sells social sets. A social set is a bundle โ€” one profile on each network you connect. Later sells individual profiles. Those are different denominators, and dividing by the wrong one produces a number that looks precise and means nothing.

Verified pricing

Planoly from its pricing page 4 September 2026; Later from its pricing page 1 September 2026. Planoly's page shows two figures per tier (monthly versus annual billing, with annual described as up to 15% cheaper). Both vendors change these โ€” check on the day.

Planoly also runs a free mobile-app tier limited to 10 uploads a month. Later has no free tier at all.

Do the division correctly and the answer flips twice

Take two realistic operators.

Operator A โ€” one brand, five networks. Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Facebook, LinkedIn. One account on each.

Operator B โ€” eight Instagram accounts, one network.

Same two products, opposite verdicts, and neither verdict is visible in a monthly-price table. The set unit rewards breadth and punishes depth.

Bundled pricing is a bet about your shape. Planoly is betting you are one brand on many networks. If you are many identities on one network, you are on the wrong side of its bet.

A set bundles across networks. A profile is one account. Dividing by the wrong one is how league tables get this backwards.

The second number: only one of them meters output

Later publishes a hard cap on posts per profile per month: 30 on Starter, 180 on Growth, unlimited on Scale. Planoly publishes no equivalent cap on its paid tiers.

Thirty posts per profile per month is one post a day, and a 31-day month breaks it. If you post daily to eight profiles, Later Starter is not an 8-profile plan โ€” it is an 8-profile plan that runs out at the end of most months. The tier you actually need is Growth at $50.

That single fact is worth more than the per-account column. Later's Starter and Growth cost exactly the same per profile ($3.13). The entire difference between them is output. We wrote that up in more detail in Buffer vs Later, where the same cap creates a six-fold gap in cost per post between two adjacent tiers.

Add-ons: Planoly is the exception to a rule we thought we had

Across this category, the marginal account is almost always cheaper than the average account โ€” buy the add-on before you buy the upgrade. Planoly is the first vendor we have priced where that breaks.

The margin is small, but the lesson is not: do the division for the specific tier you are sitting on, do not apply a rule you read somewhere. Later does not publish a per-profile add-on at all, so its steps are all-or-nothing โ€” the ninth profile costs $25.

What you are buying besides scheduling

Planoly puts Link in Bio, digital-product selling and Instagram DM automation on every tier including Starter. That is unusual. Most of this category gates features by tier and sells you upward on capability; Planoly gates only on scale. If your feature needs are modest and your account count is one, its cheapest tier is genuinely the full product.

Later is visual-first: the grid preview, the calendar, the media library. Its tiers gate output and profile count, and its identity is planning what a feed will look like before it exists.

Both are single-operator-friendly and both are Western-network only. Neither supports Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Kuaishou or WeChat Channels.

Pick by shape, not by price

What neither vendor will tell you about the switch

Migration between these two is worse than it looks, because they organise your work differently rather than merely storing it differently. Later's model is a profile with a queue and a visual grid; Planoly's is a set with a calendar. There is no native import in either direction, so a move means exporting what you can and rebuilding the schedule by hand.

Rule of thumb: if the monthly gap is under about $15, the migration costs more than the saving in the first year. Switch for a structural reason โ€” the set unit finally fits, or the post cap finally does not โ€” not for a price difference you could recover by skipping one lunch.

Verify these four things yourself

  1. What a social set includes today. Bundle definitions are the single most revised element of any pricing page. Read Planoly's own wording before you buy.
  2. Whether Later's post cap counts drafts, failed publishes or reposts. The published figure is posts per profile per month; how it counts edge cases is not stated.
  3. The exact networks each supports. Both are Western-network only, but their lists are not identical, and one missing network ends the comparison.
  4. Today's prices. Ours are dated 1 and 4 September 2026. We have watched a vendor in this category restructure its tiers inside a five-day window, so treat any figure older than a week as indicative.

FAQ

What exactly counts as one Planoly social set?

A set bundles one profile per supported network. The practical test before you pay: list every account you need to publish to, group them by network, and count the maximum number of accounts on any single network โ€” that is roughly your set count. Confirm the current definition on Planoly's own site, since bundle rules are exactly the kind of thing vendors revise.

Is Later's 30-post cap per profile or per account total?

It is published as posts per profile per month, so it scales with how many profiles you have โ€” but each profile is individually capped. One profile cannot borrow another's allowance.

Which has a free plan?

Planoly has a free mobile-app tier at 10 uploads a month. Later has none. If free is the requirement, see free social media schedulers.
